Yeah, they taught us. They taught us to sit down, shut up, behave and do our work. They taught us the cost of compliance and price of dissent. They taught us to obey.

“Line up!” and “Hands on heads!” were among our first lessons. We were better students than the Vietnamese peasants on the evening news. They didn’t need to point guns at us. Caning and detention sufficed. Along with humiliation and threats of a ruined future.

It felt like escape when the final bell rang. When the final exams were done. But it was only into a bigger schoolyard.
